Ignoring the Workflow & Layout – The Biggest Kitchen Mistake You Don’t Want to Make.
Let’s discuss the number one mistake I see homeowners make when renovating their kitchens: not considering how the space actually works.
You’d be surprised how often people get caught up in choosing benchtop materials, cabinet colours, and fancy splashbacks, only to realize later that their kitchen feels awkward and frustrating to use.
Here’s the Problem:
A kitchen might look amazing in a showroom, but if the workflow is off, you’ll feel it every single day.
If you have to walk too far between the sink, stove, and fridge, or if cupboard doors swing into each other, cooking suddenly becomes a hassle instead of something enjoyable.
Ever tried prepping food in a kitchen with nowhere to put things down? Or had to squeeze past someone to grab something from the fridge?
That’s what happens when function isn’t considered first.
How Do You Get the Layout Right?
The best kitchen layouts follow a natural flow, so you can move effortlessly between cooking, prepping, and cleaning.
Here’s how I approach it:
Start with the “Kitchen Triangle”
Your sink, stove, and fridge should form a triangle, so you’re not walking unnecessary steps to cook a meal.
They should be close enough for convenience but not cramped.
Plan for Enough Bench Space
- You need a landing area near the fridge for groceries.
- You need space between the sink and stove for food prep.
- Too little bench space? You’ll end up juggling cutting boards and plates awkwardly.
Think About Movement
If you cook with a partner, will you constantly bump into each other?
Are there high-traffic areas where kids will run through while you’re holding a hot pan?
Is your dishwasher in a spot where you can unload it easily into storage?
Make Sure Doors & Drawers Don’t Clash
Cupboard doors that clash, fridges that block walkways, and layouts that create bottlenecks can make even the nicest kitchen a headache to use.
A well-designed kitchen doesn’t just look good—it makes cooking, cleaning, and everyday tasks effortless.
Let’s make sure yours does exactly that.
